Ruptured/Herniated Disc

What is a Ruptured Disc?

A ruptured disc is an overuse injury that refers to the excessive damage or pressure on the intervertebral discs which are found in between the spinal vertebrae. The intervertebral discs are responsible for absorbing shock throughout the body, acting as a cushion for the spinal cord. Back braces will absorb and relieve shock and stress on your back allowing you to function.

When the protective layer of the intervertebral discs is damaged the inner layer may leak through its barrier. This can put pressure on the nerves, causing pain usually in the lower back and buttocks area. It is common for a ruptured disc to be the cause of other back injuries such as Sciatica and general lower back pain.

Causes of Ruptured Discs

Ruptured discs may happen for a number of reasons: it is common with aging as the body slowly degenerates, as well as wear and tear caused by sports that put significant amounts of stress on the spine.

In addition, many contributing factors include:

  • Sporting injury
  • Incorrect form when performing certain movements such as lifting, jumping and landing
  • Excessive weight gain or obesity
  • Lack of regular light exercise
  • Genetic inheritance

Ruptured Disc Symptoms
